Sailing the Greek Isles Aboard Star Flyer: Our Sporades Highlights Adventure
There's something magical about Greece—the sparkling blue waters, charming villages, fascinating history, and incredible food. This summer, my friend Jeanne and I had the opportunity to experience it in a completely different way, sailing aboard Star Clippers' magnificent Star Flyer on the Sporades Highlights itinerary.
Athens: The Perfect Beginning
Our adventure began with an overnight stay at the Athens Gate Hotel, just steps from the Acropolis. We spent the afternoon wandering through the charming streets and shops of Plaka, followed by a rooftop breakfast the next morning overlooking the Parthenon. Before boarding, we toured the Acropolis and its remarkable museum. Even on my second visit, these ancient treasures were just as impressive!
The Magic of Star Flyer
Stepping aboard Star Flyer was like entering another world. With its towering masts, beautiful teak decks, intimate atmosphere, and wonderful crew, this was sailing at its finest!
Our first evening was unforgettable. After a delicious dinner with fellow travel advisors (and a particularly generous wine waiter!), we gathered on deck for the sail-away ceremony. Under a star-filled sky, the dramatic music of Vangelis' Conquest of Paradise played as the enormous white sails slowly rose above us. It was absolutely magical!
Our next day at sea included a special tour of the ship's staterooms, arranged by our wonderful Star Clippers BDM, Candice.
Discovering the Greek Islands and Türkiye
Our first stop was Dikili, Türkiye, where an excellent guide brought the region's ancient history to life.
Next came Myrina on the island of Limnos, a delightful seaside town with waterfront cafés, shopping, beautiful beaches, and impressive castle ruins. Despite the heat, we enjoyed exploring—and stopping for a cold beer!
In Skiathos, we boarded a smaller boat for a spectacular coastal excursion to Lalaria Beach, accessible only by water. We arrived before the crowds and marveled at the brilliant turquoise sea and dramatic white cliffs. Later, a local shop owner directed us to a fabulous family-owned restaurant.
Skopelos: My Favorite Island!
Our visit to lush, beautiful Skopelos was the highlight of the entire trip!
Famous as a filming location for Mamma Mia!, the island is filled with gorgeous scenery. We visited the little chapel of Agios Ioannis, perched high above the sea and featured in Sophie's wedding scene. We also explored beautiful Kastani Beach, another recognizable movie location. The breathtaking views, pine-covered hillsides, and charming waterfront made this my favorite stop!
Our final island visit took us to Poros, where we traveled to the ancient sanctuary of Epidaurus, dedicated to Asclepius, the Greek god of healing.
One Last Magical Evening in Athens
Back in Athens, we enjoyed one final night at the Athens Gate Hotel. After a day of exploring, including watching the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, we ended our adventure at Neos Rigas Taverna in Plaka. Delicious Greek food, wine, traditional singers and dancers, and even a belly dancer made for a wonderfully entertaining evening!
Why Star Clippers Stole My Heart
What made this journey so special wasn't just the destinations. It was the friendships, delicious meals, attentive crew, and the incredible feeling of sailing so close to the sea.

Jeanne and I made wonderful memories with our fellow travel advisors, and I can't recommend this experience enough!
